How to Define Goth Style

by Sydney Jaclyn

How do you define the Goth style? First and most importantly, it's about freely expressing your individuality. The Goth lifestyle is very popular. Teens are into it, but you may be surprised to learn that people in their twenties and older are adopting it too. The three main aspects of this style are clothing and accessories, hair, and make-up.

Although black is the main color that nearly defines Goth fashion, black outfits are most often combined with heavy pewter jewelry and other distinct accessories, such as velvet tights or fishnet stockings. Black remains the most commonly used color for Goth clothing, but other colors are used as well. Dark and bright jewel tones add a feel of punk rock, which is fitting since that is the culture that the Goth style originated from.

Hair is an important part of Goth style. Hair has a lot of potential here. It is the one part of the body that's the easiest to style into an endless variety of different looks. Goths usually either dye their hair or sport wigs.

Colors range from black to pink and everything in between, but usually are limited to one flat color, or one color with highly contrasting, chunky highlights. Subtle is not a word to use in regards to Goth hair. What kind of hair styles will you see? You'll see Mohawks, bobs, blunt cuts, angled cuts, and shaved heads. You'll see everyone from girls, boys, women, and men wearing these hair styles.

Goth style make-up also includes a lot of black. Look into a Goth make up kit and you will probably find dark mascara, black liquid eye liner, and even black lipstick in there. Both women and men wear make-up to enhance their unique style. Some Goths will inject color into their make-up with dark red lipstick or even colored fake eyelashes. Many use a white foundation or cheek color for the sake of contrast.
