Eczema Problems and Exercise

by Cynthia Alleyne

Many individuals suffer from sensitive and dry skin because the protective oily layer of their skin (a thin oily film on top of the skin) is damaged. The reasons are various: genetic factors, allergies, age or excessive sun-bathing.

Weakened skin has less defensive elements and is more likely to be affected by additional stress factors such as temperature variations, synthetic materials or chemical cosmetic products.

In conjunction, those factors might trigger various negative different skin irritations such as neurodermatitis, psoriasis, red rashes, acne, rosacea and eczema.

Eczema (or dermatitis) characterized by scaly, dry, red spots are very frequent. About 10-20% of the world population suffers from eczemas on facial or body skin. Sometimes they are extremely itchy and painful. Some persons, especially children, who say the pain is can be extreme and urge to scratch become overwhelming. Eczema dehydrates the skin more than it already was. The skin becomes scaly and in the worst case it might cause pus-filled bubbles, which can open up and ooze. This leads to lasting inflammation of the skin which can destroy it permanently.

Eczema and Sports

People with the tendency to suffer from eczema say that their eczema worsens when doing sports. This occurs especially in summertime and the air humidity high. This exacerbation is caused by the sensitivity of the skin regarding hot temperatures and high humidity which is caused by sweating.

Sweat is a normal liquid produced by the glands of the body and helps it to cool down the body temperature when it gets too hot. For persons who easily develop eczemas the salty body liquid will dehydrate the skin more and make the irritation worse. So sports affect the sensitive skin negatively. The following factors can cause further irritation:

- Synthetic soccer t-shirts.

- Hot baths after doing exercise.

- Taking showers with chemical cosmetic shampoos.

- Bathing in pools full of chlorine, which irritates the skin.

- Bacterias or other microorganisms found in the surroundings causing infection of the damaged skin.

- Bad skin care, such as too much showering or quite the contrary poor body hygiene or toweling too hard with rough cloth.

The problem can be resolved with different means:

1. Work out less. Be sure to also reduce your dietary intake if you decide to take this option.

2. Do physical activity, like yoga or pilates, that are not prone to produce too much sweat.

3. Exercise in well ventilated areas with low humidity.

4. Apply only skin care products on a 100% natural basis. This type of product will impede further irritation.

For perfect skin benefit you should only apply biological skin care products. They will not dehydrate the skin, but give it back its natural vitality on the long runs and you'll not have to reduce your exercise. Common cosmetic products worsen the skin irritation biological skin care products will gently take care of all the skin's needs and help it to recover its flexibility to fight the eczema and regenerate new, healthy skin tissues.
