At-home Tips for Dry Skin

by Barbara Ann Laroche

We all hate when our skin is not as we would like it to be. Having dry skin is actually a condition that is not rare at all. The dryness can be triggered by various factors such as too much sun exposure, cold weather, a poor diet, or conditions such as psoriasis. The fact that the skin cannot retain moisture and that the sebum level is low causes the skin to feel tight and rough. There are many home made remedies that help relieve dry skin and we will look into a couple of them

Some oils cause a lot of relief when applied in dry areas. A few of these oils are lavender oil, chamomile, sandalwood oil and rose hip oil. For example, rose hip oil is very rich in vitamin A and vitamin C, and both are very good for the skin. It is also used to heal scarring and lessen the appearance of photo aging.

To drink lots of water is a must-do. If not, what you apply on your skin is irrelevant because you will never get long lasting results. Another tip is to take a bath and add to the water one cup of baking soda and if you want to even make it better, you can do the following: mix 1 cup of oatmeal, 1 cup of warm water, 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, and 1/2 cup baking soda in a mixer. You will get a soft paste. Pour the mixture into the running water that's filling up your tub when you take a bath. You will experience the softness after it.

Other Options to Fight Dry Skin

Cucumbers are also very good for the skin and making a preparation with it will also help. Apply the mashed cucumber on your skin and leave the mix there for about 10 minutes. If you do this a couple of times a week, you will see results very quickly. Two very effective recipes, even though they might not sound very appealing, are to apply mayonnaise mixed with baby oil in a ratio of 2 to 1 (tablespoons) on your most affected areas and also to apply a thick layer of Vaseline on your skin. In both procedures you have to leave the mixtures on your skin for 20 minutes and then rinse off with warm water.

If you are not as affected by dryness of the skin as others are, we still have some advice for you: try not to shower with very warm water, use a good factor of sun block when you are exposed to the sun, and have plenty of water during the day. Also, make sure that you apply a moisturizing cream or a dry skin balm daily.
